This past weekend DD and DS#2 and I decided to walk around the lake a bit. I realize that doesn’t sound very interesting but to those of you outside of North GA ,you might be interested in knowing we literally walked around “IN” the lake. If you haven’t heard... North GA is in a severe drought and has been for the last year or so. Lake Lanier and others lakes in the region are practically unrecognizable. Though, loved by boaters and fisherman alike, most of the boat ramps are closed and it is dangerously low. Normally, the water line is up to those trees and makes it an island.
Yes, that is a boating buoying (is that how you spell that?) to let boaters know of more shallow waters...in a full lake you wouldn't see the bottom half or the pole! Now, if that isn't context I don't know what is.

wow! That's pretty severe! I've seen some lows around SC too, but not this bad. We are getting some rain here today. Hope you guys will too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the photos. Somehow, I was under the impression that Georgia had begun to receive some rain and things were better. I'm in Virginia and we were pretty dry right on into early winter. Our lake that serves as a town reservoir was down about three feet. It's all back now. I don't think it would have been as much of a problem for us if it wasn't for the fact the town has allowed so much growth and there is now double the demand on the town's water supply as compared to a few years ago. We also have property on Lake Superior in Michigan and the big lake has been lower there in the past year than anyone remembers seeing it. It's all very sad.

ReplyDeleteI'm so not looking forward to another summer of watering bans. I don't know what we'll do if they decide you can't top off swimming pools. Hotter than Hades, dry as a bone and you can't go swimming either.
I can't begin to imagine. We've had too much rain up here and everything is frozen.

I can't believe the lake looks like that! I'd hoped North Georgia had gotten some much needed rain over the past couple of weeks. Maybe it will be a rainy Spring? Lets hope so!!!

Lake Lanier is usually so pretty, it's a shame. Same thing is happening to Okeechobee down south. INcidentally I have a countdown till Atlanta runs out of water countdown on my blog---I wonder when I'll be able to reset it!

Wow! We are in bad shape at our lake too, here in SC. I posted a few pictures a couple posts back and all of our docks are totally out of the water! Though, I did read an article where the water has come up 1 1/2 feet in the last month! I think (know) we are fairing better here than there!
ReplyDeleteWow! that bouy photo really does give perspective! I've lived here 12 years and we've always had periods of drought, but certainly nothing like this. Makes you wonder WHEN it will normalize and how much rain would it take?

ReplyDeleteWe are in drought trouble here in NC as well. Our town just banned all outdoor watering, some car washes were forced to close and no power washing of houses. I am praying for a very wet Spring, and I promise not to complain!

Are you guys over near Lake Lanier. We visited my cousin over in Gainesville not too long ago and I was floored by the lake. We live near Lake Alatoona. They say it has come up 12 feet or so since Christmas, but I don't know where! I hope that all the rain we have lately will be a sign of a wet spring and summer.

So sorry to hear and see about your lakes. I remember the Mississippi drying up like that one summer...I thought the world had to be near ending but it finally got back to normal.
I bet someone with a metal detector could find some pretty interesting stuff out there!
